They Killed the Man and Kept the Brand

Let’s say the quiet part loud.

How dumb do you have to be to think the empire that crucified Jesus preserved his actual fucking message?

Come on.

Rome didn’t kill him because he was boring. They killed him because he was dangerous. Good news to the poor. Woe to the rich. Forgive your enemies. Overturn the tables. The last will be first. That is not a message that plays nice with empire. That is a message that gets you nailed to a cross.

He ate with outcasts. He touched lepers. He talked to women like they mattered. He forgave people the religious machine had already written off. He called the pious hypocrites. He told the comfortable that their comfort was a trap. He told the powerful that their power was on borrowed time. He preached a kingdom that was not Rome. He preached a kingdom that was not the temple. He preached a kingdom where the first are last and the last are first. That is not a message that plays nice with empire. That is a message that gets you arrested, tortured, and executed.

So why would the same empire, or the religious machine that married itself to empire, turn around and protect the raw, liberating, against power gospel? It wouldn’t. It didn’t.

They killed him. Then they rebranded him.

They took a Jewish preacher who threatened the powerful and turned him into a mascot for the powerful. They turned a Roman torture device into jewelry. They turned his name into a sword. They turned his gospel into a bureaucracy. They turned his radical grace into a fear based membership program: obey, pay, believe the right things, or burn forever.

And once they had the sword, they used it. They murdered people who didn’t agree. They burned books. They silenced mystics. They canonized the texts that kept the peasants in line and buried the ones that sounded too free. They gave you hellfire and told you it was love.

This was not a small accident. This was a hostile takeover. The faith of a crucified criminal became the religion of the throne. The persecuted became the persecutors. The ones who followed a man who washed feet started wearing crowns. The ones who met in houses started building cathedrals. The ones who shared everything started hoarding gold. The ones who were told to turn the other cheek started burning heretics.

They didn’t preserve his gospel. They domesticated it. They took the sharp edges off. They turned “blessed are the poor” into “blessed are the obedient.” They turned “woe to the rich” into “give us your money and God will bless you.” They turned “love your enemy” into “kill the infidel.” They turned “the truth will set you free” into “stay in line or you will go to hell.”

The lying of the lying class controls everything you do. It tells you the most popular Bible is the infallible word of God, dropped from heaven, untouched by politics. Bullshit. It’s a library. It was copied, translated, edited, voted on, and weaponized by men with empires to protect. Councils met. Bishops argued. Emperors leaned in. Books were included and excluded. Verses were added and softened. Translations were made to serve kings. The King James Bible was not handed down on stone tablets. It was commissioned by a king who wanted a Bible that kept his throne safe. That doesn’t mean there’s no truth in it. It means the truth in it has been filtered through the same system that killed the man in the first place.

You want the actual message? It’s not hiding in a throne. It’s not owned by a corporation. It’s not enforced by a megachurch. It’s not sold on a prosperity gospel stage. It’s in the dirt. Feed the hungry. Heal the sick. Free the captive. Love your enemy. Question the powerful. Give away your bread. Don’t bow to Caesar. Don’t confuse faith with fear. Don’t confuse God with a flag. Don’t confuse the cross with a sword.

Here’s the twist: the empire didn’t lose. It won. It made you worship the cross while still bowing to the sword. It made you sing about freedom while sitting in chains. It made you pray to a man who was executed by the state while you cheer for the state. It made you think the most popular religion is the same thing as the good news. It isn’t.

They didn’t preserve his gospel. They preserved his corpse and built a religion around the crime scene. They turned his memory into a machine. They turned his name into a weapon. They turned his grace into a gate. They turned his table into a toll booth.

So stop asking permission from the empire to follow the guy the empire executed. Read. Deconstruct. Question. Pray if you want. But don’t confuse the voice of God with the voice of a control system that has always been terrified of a free soul. Don’t let anyone tell you that the only way to love Jesus is to obey the people who killed him. Don’t let anyone sell you a savior who looks exactly like the people he opposed.

They killed him. Then they sold you a version of him that keeps you afraid, obedient, and paying.

That’s not good news. That’s empire. And empire always looks the same. It always needs a cross. It always needs a hell. It always needs a list of enemies. It always needs your money. It always needs your fear. It always needs your silence.

The good news is that the real message is still there. Not in the throne. Not in the vault. Not in the megachurch. Not in the state. It’s in the dirt. It’s in the streets. It’s in the outsider. It’s in the prisoner. It’s in the poor. It’s in the person you were told to hate. It’s in the still small voice that says: you are free. Act like it.

That’s the twist. They killed the man. They kept the brand. But they couldn’t kill the message. Not completely. Not if you refuse to bow.
