Why Seeking Salvation Is Just Another Hypnosis

There is a restless hunger in the human heart. We long for rescue. We long for something or someone to come and make us whole. We turn to religion, to a teacher, to a sacred place, to a philosophy, to a system of ideas. We believe that if we can just find the right one, we will finally be safe. But this is a mistake. If you believe in any religion, in any person, in any place, in anything, or in any system to save you, you are only moving from one hypnosis to another. You are leaping out of the frying pan and into the fire.

The Search for a Savior Outside Yourself

How do you know that any one of those people have the answers for you? They do not. But you will not believe that until you discover it for yourself. You must walk the road. You must taste the disappointment. You must see that every external promise of a cure, every answer, every religion, every teacher, every lover, every ideology has a malevolent will behind it. That will does not want you to find the truth. It wants to keep you dependent, searching, and asleep.

The truth is that the place you are looking for has always been within you. It has never been anywhere else. But you do not experience it as a welcome friend. You feel it as guilt. You feel it as conscience. You feel it almost as an enemy. And in a sense it is an enemy. It is an enemy of the Spirit that has gotten inside you and spread throughout your being. It is an enemy of the will that controls you. It is the voice that keeps you running, keeps you angry, keeps you rejecting, keeps you looking for another escape.

The Enemy Inside

If you could listen to a man like myself, you would simply sit still. You would stop running. You would stop getting angry at the inner conflict. You would stop rejecting it. You would stop looking for ways to escape it. You would stop chasing new belief systems, new religions, new loves to immerse yourself in. You would stop trying to reinforce the idea that wrong is right. You would stop thumbing your nose at heaven, so to speak.

If you could hear what I have to say, and if you could sit quietly in a chair and be still and know, you would begin to move in the opposite direction. There are only two directions you can move. You are either moving emotionally away from reality toward the false reinforcements of pride, or you are moving toward rest. The first direction requires you to keep pecking and picking like a chicken. Peck, peck, peck, peck, peck. You must always keep moving, moving, moving, faster and faster. You cannot stop because stopping would force you to face what you are running from.

The Psychology of Stillness

When you realize that this constant motion brings into you the wrong identity, the wrong belief system, and all its tragic consequences, you will begin to understand the other way. The other way is being still. There is only motion, and then there is rest. Those who do not want to find the truth are restless. They are always moving, always moving away, always moving into something. And so something gets into them. They begin to think that the something which gets into them is them. They think it is more of them, but it is not. It is more of it.

The heart races. The mind spins. The feet keep moving. But none of this motion brings peace. It only brings a deeper sleep. The more you chase, the more you are caught. The more you grasp, the more you are held. The answer is not in the next thing. The answer is in the stillness you are avoiding.

Be Still and Know

Be still. When you are still, you are no longer pursuing that thing. You are no longer into that thing. You are into that which you were running away from. And it is into you. You have found the truth that sets you free, and you live by faith. There is a plan that God has for all of us. I am giving you the psychology of it. The plan is not found in the noise. It is found in the silence. It is not found in the next belief system. It is found in the stillness where you finally stop running and let the truth find you.
